Celebrities seem to have it all, but the phrase “tears of a clown” is often all too true. Celebrities are no different to you or I. Like us; they have weaknesses because whether the media wants you to believe it or not, they are human. In fact addiction is common within the celebrity population. Why that is would be anyones guess. Perhaps the lifestyle is filled with more stress and anxiety than an average persons daily routine. Or, maybe the kind of jobs celebrities take are suited to those who have serious psychological issues. Regardless of the reason a number of celebs beat their addiction and turn over a new leaf.
It is hard to believe that the world’s most bankable star once had serious and severe addiction problems. No one knows quite when Downey’s life deteriorated to the point he could no longer hold an acting job. The breaking point came when Downey had to leave the hit show Ally McBeal after being unable to cope with his addiction. Rumour has it that the ending originally had Downey’s character as the leads happy ending and that was completely rewritten. But that was a long time ago and ever since the success he found playing iron man, the actor has never looked back. In fact he now even refuses to talk about those troublesome years, as shown when he walked out of a TV interview earlier this year.
Again, who would have expected that a fantastic actor and entertainer like Martin Sheen had a problem with addiction? But Martin Sheen’s troubled past with alcohol is no secret. Sheen is probably best known for his starring role as the US president on The West Wing, a show that ran for seven seasons. He famously said that his faith was what brought him to the point of sobriety. Interestingly, sheen’s character on the west wing also commonly turned to the catholic church to deal with big issues. Addiction was never really touched on in the show although the writer and creator Aaron Sorkin is famous for being high while working on it.
Barrymore was a child star and addict ever since she was nine years old. A lot of her problems in earlier life were kept under wraps until she released a biography at age 14. Barrymore curbed the addiction by getting women’s drug treatment in the form of rehab. However the movie star is also the figurehead for people who believe you do not have to stop completely to beat an addiction. The actress famously has stated she is not sober but has tried to find a “happy balance.”
Finally, the iconic and legendary rapper who has one of the world’s best vocabularies had a severe drug abuse problem. In fact many people believe his later music suffered because of it. But, in 2009 Eminem returned to the music scene sober and better than ever. His first album released after he was t-total received mixed reviews but the next two were pure gold.
